Rev. Laksmi in the Ganges Swami Bua Maharaj |
My Yoga Awakening Story: Being a
teenager in the 60's and early 70's, eastern philosophy,
psychedelics and yoga were all very available and I did
take advantage of the opportunity to experience them. My
first experience was with Richard Hittleman via
television where every morning at 7am Richard's Guru
Ramana Maharshi was featured.
In 1977, I meet my in person yoga master Swami Bua Maharaj from The Divine Life Society, which was started by Master Sivananda of Rishikesh. At the time, Swami Bua was 77 years young, and his asana ability was profound. I was 23 and remember thinking that if i did yoga my entire life, i would never reach the levels of Swami Bua. We met in his living room on 58th St. and 8th ave every day, Monday to Friday at 6pm and Saturday and Sunday earlier in the day. There were no props then, mats, blocks, none of it! We used large soft bath mats that had rubber on the bottom. Looking back, I was Blessed to be in his presence and learn directly from a Master. Swami Bua ji tagged a few of us as his teachers when he traveled to teach Yoga in South America and during his return trips to India. In 1983, I
left his presence after being hit by a car. In my
30's, I learned all about free-weight training. In the
later part of my 40's my body began to break down.
It took the medical establishment a few years to
diagnose what was wrong -- high cortisol. I was told I
had Cushings disease. That period in my life was the
dark night of the soul for me.
I took
something to lower the cortisol and had the realization
that my body was sick because my mind was sick. I then
went right into Mantra Jappa and started with hospital
bed yoga. I did yoga at the -- then new--
McBurney Y on 14th St. for a few years before a
friend/teacher brought me to Integral Yoga on 13th St.
in 2006. It was around this time that i understood
the profound effect Swami Bua's yoga had on my body
and mind. Doing work exchanges at Integral
allowed me to take yoga classes and take my first and
second yoga teacher training. I did my
advanced training in Yogaville in 2013.
I also took meditation teacher training, Raja Yoga Teacher training, and then began the process of becoming a Satchidananda Minister and was ordained on November 4th, 2017 in Yogaville. I am most
grateful to all my teachers and honored to be able to
share my experience with others.
